Product Engineer

Role/Purpose:

This role will utilize an engineering background and expertise to develop products for the Transport and Logistics (T&L) strategic business unit (SBU).  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will develop solutions for dynamic weighing and dimensioning applications, which meet the customer requirements using cost effective design methodology.  This role will develop a strong presence with plant colleagues to ensure quality standards are being met.  This position will interact, assist and lead in the modification of existing products and customized solutions, as well as, assist with new product development.  This position will be required to interact with sales, distribution, internal marketing representatives and manufacturing to develop product solutions efficiently and effectively.

  • Participate in meaningful and constructive exchanges of ideas and knowledge.
  • Conceive, define, develop, and design products/processes per project schedules.
    • Develop design concepts and evaluate design alternatives
    • Utilize standard factory processes/capabilities, as well as, standard components in designs as often as possible
    • Create mechanical, electrical and manufacturing drawings and schematics
    • Create bills of materials and new materials in SAP
    • Support in user documentation creation
    • Create manufacturing support documentation
    • Perform product performance testing and regulatory compliance testing
    • Work with others to coordinate manufacturing scheduling of assigned orders
    • Support manufacturing process development of existing and new products
  • Assure that new or modified designs meet or exceed applicable industry standards and performance / cost goals, and in the absence of documented goals, obtain knowledge of applicable industry standards, customers, markets, manufacturing capability, and product applications to result in appropriate design choices.
  • Provide project support to the MT Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process.
  • Provide technical support to the Producing Organization, including product support specialists and assemblers.
  • Interface with other departments, vendors, customers, regulatory agencies, etc. as appropriate to expedite work.
  • Some travel required (up to 10%) to support other plants, logistics hub, and customer sites.

    • 10%  Manufacturing engineering support 
    • 10%  Material and bill of material creation and maintenance
    • 10%  ETO processing of customized solutions
    • 35%  Maintenance of product line investigation, execution and guidance
    • 35%  New product development and PLM

What You Need to Succeed

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in developing products and applications closely with customers and end users
  • Understanding of weighing applications through field experience and customer interaction
  • Ability to present products and solutions to customers internally and externally in a manner representative of MT vision and values
  • Experience or understanding of fabrication and assembly of large manufacturing assemblies
  • Product design experience; preferably within a technical or industrial field
  • Proficient with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Siemens Team Center, Eplan & SAP.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and consistently meet completion deadlines
  • The motivation, adaptability, and professional qualities to work with multiple disciplines across global organizations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to lead projects and work as part of a project team
  • Sound analytical abilities and business sense
  • Ability to apply extra effort if required to meet project/team goals
  • SAP SCM understanding helpful
  • General knowledge of electrical codes such as NFPA79, UL508A
  • Experience in automated machinery design, including conveyors and material handling in a manufacturing environment is preferred


Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred, other disciplines accepted with experience
  • Technical degrees accepted with a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience.
