Software Development Manager

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of AutoChem Software Center, this position is responsible for creating and supporting software products that control and integrate laboratory instruments and/or provide functions related to our instrument platforms. This position is responsible for the production of source code that is readable, maintainable and extendable. Working with other Software Center leaders, this position helps execute software development projects consistent with the overall software product roadmap.  Essential responsibilities will include:  
  • Participate as an active member of the software development leadership team to deliver quality software products according to defined processes and best practices
  • Ensure all software developers continuously improve their software development skills through education, discussions with other developers and contributions to best practices documentation
  • Hire and train staff to acquire necessary resource levels and skills and direct staff to meet scheduled product delivery commitments. Develop and monitor objectives and career development plans for direct reports and provide direct supervision, coaching and mentoring.
  • Collaborate with the development team and key stakeholders to ensure the optimal application of technology and development practices to meet the stated product market requirements
  • Ensure development and implementation of processes, tools and best practices to support effective software development in alignment with Mettler Toledo PLM framework.  Collaborate with the software development leadership team to ensure products are fully and correctly defined, documented, tested and released.
  • Ensure the development staff provides responsive support to reported customer issues
  • Provide leadership in the design and specification of software product architectures
  • Design, implement and unit test software, including complex software such as device assemblies, shareable components, databases and services
  • Analyze and solve complex technical problems.
  • Modify existing software requirement specifications and create new specifications based on input from marketing, engineering design meetings and customer requirements
  • Design/prototype/develop user interface components

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Ten (10) years software development experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in technical leadership / supervision of staff
  • Five (5) years of experience using current development tools for Windows Programming, i.e. Visual Studio, .NET, C#, Team Foundation Server
  • Demonstrated ability to design and specify complex software architectures and develop and support complex software products
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Open and effective communication style, excellent public presentation skills, and the ability to interact with, and influence, key stakeholders
  • Sound judgment, analytical skills, decision-making skills and the ability to work under pressure
  • Strong team player 
  • Ability to lead and mentor software developers
  • SAP knowledge preferred
