Software (Firmware) Engineer

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

Rainin, a division of Mettler Toledo, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer.  The Research and Development team at Rainin plays a key role in revitalizing, innovating and creating products.  As a Senior Software Engineer in our company, you will collaborate with scientists, and our engineering team to write code which enhances our devices.  

This person will: 
  • Embedded firmware,Create and maintain instrument-control firmware for our new and existing products
  • Generate embedded firmware for instrument control at the microprocessor level for new products and R&D test fixtures.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on developing new product test fixtures
  • Work with Marketing on designing GUI's for our devices – and manage GUI firmware and software developments with internal and external resources.
  • Be a primary contributor to new product qualification testing at both the operational and customer acceptance levels.
  • Write and review software and firmware requirement documentation,
  • Provide guidance and peer review to other engineers facing challenging design decisions

What You Need to Succeed

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields
  • 10+ years developing embedded software in commercial products - preferably in a Life Science or Diagnostic Device domain.
  • Agile/Scrum software development process experience using JIRA/TFS
  • Comfortable with RFID, Bluetooth/LE, TCP/IP networking protocols
  • Ability to read and understand circuit diagrams and use of scopes, logic analyzers, JTAG probes for debugging
  • Experience working with an Electrical Engineer on electronics hardware bring-up
  • Working knowledge of common low-level communication protocols: SPI, I2C, I2S, UART
  • Working knowledge of peripheral devices: Nor-Flash, serial EEPROMS, Sound-Codecs, stepper and/or DC motor drivers
  • Knowledge of real-time operating systems like FreeRTOS, MicroC-OS, or VxWorks
  • Experience with Linux/Yocto a plus
  • Good knowledge of at least one embedded processor architecture, e.g. ARM, MIPS, PIC etc.
  • Demonstrated and significant depth of understanding of (embedded) software architecture
  • Experience with designing testable software with good automated test coverage
  • Familiarity with design and architectural patterns
  • Multithreaded programming
  • Comfortable with .NET/WPF/Universal Windows Applications
  • Comfortable with a scripting language like Python or Perl
  • Ability to be productive in a dynamic environment
  • Strength in ability to communicate, both verbal and written
  • Strong desire and ability to collaborate across all business units and all levels of staff
  • Familiar with the Agile development software processes. Code reviews, architecture and design practices, SCRUM software development cycles with Sprints, user stories, task estimation and planning
  • Team player who is self-motivated, results oriented and continuously looking to improve own skills
  • Has demonstrable track record for delivering results, taking ownership and is accountable of software from design to commercialization - preferably in a Life Science or Diagnostic Device domain.
