Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will work on projects that develop equipment for the food and pharma industries. The designs can range from simple modification to existing product lines through to significant customisations required to meet specific customer requirements.

Responsibilities of this post are to work with the Project Engineering team to turn customer-defined requirements into fully designed and detailed products that are optimised for both manufacture and assembly. Duties include but not limited to material selection, component detailed design, structural analysis (FEA), component drafting, configuring Bills of Materials, drawing checking and demonstration of compliance to specification.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • To produce designs and subsequent manufacturing drawings and related documentation using primarily AutoDesk Inventor CAD    software.
  • Design systems based on design-function relationships, serviceability, materials and methods engineering, production costs, and client specifications.
  • To undertake mechanical design calculations that validate the chosen design concepts.
  • To undertake material and equipment specification.
  • To discuss and interpret requirements and to prepare concise engineering specifications as a prerequisite to design.
  • To discuss and resolve design related production problems with in-house manufacturing departments, sub-contractors and   suppliers.
  • To review customer provided tender documentation and assess to compliance of company products to customers' requirements.
  • Develop own personal technical competence.
  • Keeping up to date with changes to applicable UK and European legislation.
  • Structuring Bill of Materials.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed

  • Experience in the design of electro-mechanical machinery, ideally within food/pharmaceutical machinery or similar equipment with an appreciation of some of the following:
o Conveyor systems
o Pneumatic systems
o Precision mechanical assemblies
o Food or pharmaceutical constructional materials and finishes
  • Degree qualified or equivalent in mechanical engineering or relevant technical design discipline.
  • Creative with experience in New Product Development from concept through to production.
  • Experience in design for manufacture as well as knowledge of manufacturing processes (i.e. sheet metal fabrications, castings, welded joints).
  • Hands-on experience of a 3D CAD system (preferably Inventor) including actual production of working designs
  • Familiarity with SAP and TeamCentre is a significant advantage.
  • An appreciation and understanding of relevant UK, European and International standards, codes of practice and procedures (e.g. Machinery Directive).
