METTLER TOLEDO Process Analytics (MTPRO) is a leading supplier to end-users and system integrators for liquid analytical measurement solutions to control production processes. METTLER TOLEDO Thornton, a Strategic Business Unit within MTPRO, is the leader in pure and ultrapure industrial water monitoring instrumentation used in semiconductor, microelectronics, power generation, pharmaceutical, and biotech applications. Our core competence is the in-line measurement of conductivity, resistivity, TOC, dissolved oxygen, dissolved ozone and related parameters in determining and controlling water purity.

The Mettler Toledo - Thornton R&D team develops and supports analytical measuring instrumentation that delivers robust, online, real-time, and continuous performance for process control and/or absolute measurements for pure and ultrapure water applications in the semiconductor, power, and pharmaceutical industries.

The Senior Chemist plays a critical hands-on role on the R&D team by leading and performing chemical analyzer technology research, new product development, and some sustaining engineering activities. Responsibilities include the researching, developing, vetting, and implementation of new technologies, experimental design, technology and new product qualification testing against product market requirements, quality testing, design for manufacturability and service, technical project management and leadership, and organization/upkeep of the chemistry laboratory and equipment.  

A successful candidate for this role works well in a small group with a dynamic, cross-functional, team environment that spans electrical, optical, software, mechanical, and chemical engineering backgrounds.  If you are motivated by technical challenges that cross-disciplinary boundaries, and value product quality and customer value, this role could be the perfect fit! Position is located in Billerica, MA.

Contributes as part of a cross-functional product development team to develop new products, features, services, and processes.
Works with scientists and engineers, and conducts basic-to-advanced research related to new technologies, product applications, or new products.
Investigates opportunities for product/process improvements, and finds/implements solutions.
Prepares chemical compounds/solutions for testing, development, and research.
Provides applications support to Marketing.
Tests/debugs prototypes of new designs, verifying that specifications are met.
Performs and documents quality tests on chemical products.
Writes alpha/gamma qualification test plans and reports.
Maintains R&D chemistry laboratory, including chemical equipment and supplies 
Writes assembly procedures and QC test procedures for new designs.  Writes and updates operating procedures for existing operations as needed.
Evaluates competitor products and technologies.
Builds and tests prototype chemical products.
Participates in intra-company teams such as Audit, Safety, Recreation, etc…

What You Need to Succeed

Ph.D. or M.S. plus 5 years of relevant experience, or B.S./B.A. plus 10 years of relevant experience in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or Chemical Instrumentation is required.  Alternative disciplines considered.
Experience in chemical/electrochemical sensor research and product development is required.
Experience with (Capillary) Electrophoresis system development desired.  Microchip CE design highly valuable.  
Experience with trace chemical, particle, or microbial detection technologies is desirable.
Experience in analytical validation methods, chemical separation technologies, optical or spectroscopic detection methods, chemometrics, advanced data analysis, process control, and/or water purification chemistry is desirable.
Leadership/organizational/project management skills are desirable.
Proficient in the use of standard Microsoft Office tools.
