Field Service Engineer - West Coast

We are rapidly expanding our presence in the field of drug discovery and development with our AutoChem Strategic Business Unit. Mettler Toledo AUTOCHEM provides laboratory instruments to research scientists in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical industries helping them discover and develop new chemical compounds, allowing them to bring new products to market faster. 

Our Field Service Product Specialists represent the Mettler Toledo standard of "Trusted Advisor" to our customers. We are looking for a customer-focused individual to conduct on-site installations, repairs, preventive maintenance, and customer training (hardware, software and limited applications) on the West Coast, ideally located in the San Francisco Bay area.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Performing on-site installations, repairs, upgrades, and maintenance of our instruments, including infrared reaction profiling equipment, laser crystallization monitoring equipment, automated lab reactor and sampling solution systems, proprietary software and associated applications
  • Establishing and maintaining a “Trusted Advisor” role for all customer interactions by delivering exceptional customer service, expertise, product positioning, lead generation and training. Successful service agreement and key account management is a must.
  • Consistently documenting, communicating and managing customer issues with the Sales, Service and support teams
  • Proactively prioritizing, scheduling, tracking and executing service assignments to satisfactory completion
  • Escalating ongoing, prolonged field situations to service management and communicating non-conformance issues for quality enhancements and technical bulletins 
  • Traveling is estimated at 75%, which includes day trips and some overnight stays within the West Coast territory, some extended overnight trips outside of the territory and occasional international travel for product training
  • Maintaining and projecting a professional appearance and demeanor

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 4 years military or commercial experience or equivalent education in electronic/electrical engineering environment with a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic, electrical, mechanical, and computer systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated competence and abilities to complete daily tasks associated with field service responsibilities
  • Experience with Infrared, Optics, Lasers, HPLC, GC, Mass Spectrometry, or background in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is a plus
  • Documented abilities to troubleshoot electronic, electrical, mechanical instruments and computer systems
  • Possess general software literacy and knowledge of Windows-based operating systems
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the demonstrated ability to perform in a sometimes stressful environment
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written – English required
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Willingness and ability to travel, both domestically and internationally
  • SAP knowledge preferred
