Head of R&D Engineering

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

The Head of R&D is responsible for leading the planning, design, development, and coordination of new product development.   They are also responsible for managing the product design from "cradle to grave", including Value Engineering on existing products and driving improvement in product quality and cost.   Establishes the overall objectives and initiatives of the R&D Engineering Department. Develops ideas for new products or product enhancements and oversees the creation and improvement of products that involve the Engineering Department. Provides engineering expertise to other departments where needed. Manages key R&D projects and ensures the achievement of milestones within budget and time lines. The team consists of ~25 Engineers, Managers, Project Managers, and Support personnel

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. 

  • Devises plans and initiatives, sets policies, and guides the activities of R&D staff to ensure achievement of strategic and tactical goals
  • Directs and coordinates the research and development group, including engineering design and development of innovative pipetting products and disposables and the development of long-range goals and objectives.
  • Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) Initiatives from Idea Generation to Active Product Life
  • Participates in major day-to-day operating decisions and provides strong leadership and managerial acumen to Rainin
  • Define and manage Product Development KPIs and stage gates to monitor progress and risk
  • Monitors alternative technologies in the marketplace.
  • Coordinate and manage external Engineering Service Providers to supplement internal development resources
  • Assist functional team managers to estimate work required and generate functional team plans for resource estimation
  • Ensure detailed and high quality business requirements are documented for all Projects
  • Communicate transparently and concisely to relevant stakeholders regarding project status, plans, risks, and mitigation plans
  • Take measures to avoid business disruptions from New Product Introductions or other Project Initiatives
  • Effectively and constructively challenge stakeholders to ensure requirements are well defined and effective solutions are being developed
  • Manages the company’s intellectual property, including assisting in the identification of patentable inventions in Rainin research and development projects and developed products; assisting in the preparation and prosecution of patents inside and outside the US; and assessing competitor intellectual property, products and marketing for relevance to Rainin.  Reviews prepared legal agreements regarding intellectual property, licensing, confidentiality or other business matters of MT Rainin.
  • Champion lean methodologies in Product Development and end-to-end processes

What You Need to Succeed

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Industrial) or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, Lean Manufacturing Techniques, and general management principles
  • A Minimum of 10 years of experience in Engineering or Operations
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results through effective leadership
  • Detailed understanding of PLM lifecycle management processes
