Product Engineering Manager

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

Rainin Instrument, a subsidiary of METTLER TOLEDO, is looking for an experienced and self-motivated Product Engineering Manager to join our Engineering/Research & Development (R+D) team in our Oakland, CA headquarters. This position will direct a Project Team and is responsible for leading the research, development, and engineering of new and existing products. This position reports directly to the Head of R+D Engineering.


The ideal candidate will use his/her extensive Mechanical engineering and Team management experience to:

·       Plan and implement engineering program, including defining the project philosophy, activities, milestone, and staff requirements.  Manages engineering projects, primarily in the development of new products. 

·       Develop and maintain a schedule and budget for the assigned engineering project.  Controls expenditures within limitation of project budget. 

·       Refine designs based on prototype testing and assist with preparation of manufacturing documentation.  Support existing released product; may work with marketing and technical services to assist customers.

·       Assign and oversee project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, product design, preparation to specifications and technical plans, and product testing.

·       Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements, and related specification.

·       Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.  Directs integration of technical activities and products.

·       Be responsible for the overall development, coordination, and evaluation of subordinates.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Appraising performance, rewarding and coaching the Team, Career development, addressing and resolving problems. 

What You Need to Succeed

  • Ability to successfully lead a dedicated Team of engineers and technicians on project assignments.
  • Demonstrated success working with internal and external product development partners. 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to be self-directed when necessary.
  • Strong department management skills including organization and technical oversight.
  • Strong technical engineering documentation skills.
  • Sufficient business/finance acumen to assess department investments, optimize product costs to deliver cost-mitigated solutions, and select/assess cost-appropriate materials and production methods.
  • Experience leading several large scale projects with multiple dependencies across teams
  • Experience actively coaching and mentoring team members in their careers
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, MS preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in related industry with at least 2+ years of managing people
  • Work experience with a strong focus on new product design and project management
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, assembly, and troubleshooting
  • Experience in high volume injection molding and associated materials a plus
  • Experience with ISO 9000 and Product Life Cycle Management a plus
