Head of Global R&D

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of AutoChem, this position will be responsible for leading a highly talented global R&D organization to deliver new products in the innovation roadmap of the business and early prototyping technology projects, ensuring robust quality of existing products, and continuously advancing organizational capabilities in line with future technology trends. This role ensures collaboration with key stakeholders to achieve both short- and long-term product portfolio objectives. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Providing day-to-day leadership and direction to the R&D teams comprising of hardware development, software development, systems testing, and global project office (GPO) across Columbia, MD and Nanikon, Switzerland. 
  • Owning the R&D long-term strategy and vision that is required to deliver on AutoChem's business strategy. 
  • Championing a culture for innovation within AutoChem. Creating an engaged R&D organization, focusing on clear deliverables tied to market and business needs. 
  • Ensuring R&D project roadmaps can deliver effectively on the product roadmaps of the Strategic Product Groups (SPG). Collaborating closely with SPG leaders to align timelines and investment considerations, maximizing ROI and ensuring that market needs are met. 
  • Ensuring strong cadence of effective communication between R&D and other stakeholders in AutoChem (SPGs, Quality, Operations), in Mettler Toledo Group & Division (Product Line Management, Software Development Center, etc.), and external technology partners, to advance the right business outcomes. 
  • Effectively working with project leaders and technical experts to analyze complex problems and help identify creative, logical, and effective solutions. 
  • Ownership and control of the annual R&D budget for project and personnel, making effective trade-offs to maximize value. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed

  • Minimum of a master's degree in chemical engineering, computer science, or related engineering field. PhD preferred. 
  • Ten (10) years of experience with analytical instrumentation or chemistry automation development. 
  • Minimum (5) years of R&D management experience. 
  • Ability to lead a dynamic, global team. 
  • Up to 30% domestic and global travel. 
  • Experience and understanding of engineering technical issues/needs, finance, sales, and marketing as they relate to both software and hardware design and development. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across functions and multiple disciplines, comfortable in a matrix environment. 
  • Experience developing technical papers and presentations.
