Trade Customs Compliance Specialist

Role/Purpose:

The Trade Customs Compliance Specialist provides the Company with import/export regulatory direction for both internal and external customers, including researching and analyzing information to support the development and implementation of effective compliance policies and procedures. This position applies existing rules and regulations to the Company’s processes to ensure compliance which includes the preparation and submission of required filings and reporting documentation. The Trade Customs Compliance Specialist provides strategic guidance and education to Company management and staff on import/export compliance issues and has an important voice in setting the Company’s global compliance policy.  The position functions in a very strong corporate culture of compliance management. This position is an opportunity to handle challenging and interesting multi-faceted compliance involving the U.S., China, Europe and Latin America. The role has trade compliance responsibility over multiple locations across North America and collaborates with team members and business partners globally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish accurate TARIFF classifications across a very broad assortment of products, components, materials, and spare parts; and maintain appropriate material master data
  • Maintain Country of Origin for products, components, materials and spare parts in the material master data
  • Participate in required regional and global meetings; contribute and support as required.
  • Execute assigned projects.
  • Provide all relevant data to customs broker to ensure timely and accurate entry filing and customs clearance
  • Ensure record keeping documentation is complete
  • Work with customs brokers on any issues involving clearances and customs entries
  • Audit completed customs entries as per Customs Improvement Plan, request entry adjustment if applicable
  • Establish classification worksheets to support item classifications
  • Establish and maintain Export Control Commodity Number (ECCN) for current material
  • Ensure compliance with all customs rules and regulations
  • Serve as a channel for resolution on compliance issues, including stopping orders/shipments if compliance concerns are not reconciled.
  • Monitor and coordinate shipping activities to ensure compliance with governmental requirements. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with the dynamics of the changes in government regulations, recommend Mettler Toledo policies, and apply them to daily procedures.
  • Increase knowledge in the area(s) of government regulations and compliance including, but not limited to, import/export compliance including PGA, international logistics, customs documentation, receiving, order processing and shipping procedures.
  • Ability to identify and describe parts, machines and components in great detail in order to completely and accurately support classification determinations in accordance with regulations.
  • Ability to provide informative and professional assistance when working with the suppliers/customers and co-workers, including maintaining positive interpersonal relationships which encourage openness.
  • Demonstration of strong verbal and written communication skills to produce accurate, professional and error-free documents and present information and train personnel at all levels.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Knowledge of SAP ERP system strongly desired.
  • Experience supporting internal and external customers in a Shared Services environment with different ERP systems is ideal.


What You Need to Succeed

Minimum Education / Experience Required:

  • HTS Classification experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Business or Technology or equivalent and a minimum of 8 years' experience in the field of import and export control.
  • Knowledge of written German or Mandarin helpful
  • Customs Brokerage license a plus.
