Lead Software Test Engineer

Our Opening and Your Responsibilities

Mettler-Toledo AutoChem is seeking a Lead Software Test Engineer for its Columbia, MD location. This position is responsible for working with software developers, offshore test resources, software project leads, project managers, and product managers to ensure that the software products are properly and fully tested according to current best practices. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate as an active member of the software development team to deliver quality software products according to defined processes and best practices. Best practices for software development life cycle include test strategy and test automation strategy. 
  • Provide guidance, coaching, mentoring, and leadership to help implement a harmonized software testing process across all AutoChem. 
  • Develop and/or execute software test cases in a timely manner for our software products.
  • Perform ad-hoc software testing based on product knowledge, testing needs and benefits.
  • Conduct various types of testing (i.e., smoke testing, regression testing, performance testing) and record results.
  • Report bugs generated by testing activities in a manner consistent with current practices to ensure proper content and format and to eliminate duplication.
  • Assist in the re-production of reported software problems.
  • Provide information on bug reports to assist in their resolution by the development team.
  • Provide recommendations for changes to existing test cases to improve breadth and depth of testing and update test cases to provide future testing coverage of customer reported problems.
  • Recommend, implement and support quality improvements and changes to testing processes, procedures, tools, and work products to correct deficiencies and noncompliance and improve efficiency.
  • Develop software product test summary reports including appropriate metrics.
  • Review and evaluate that user requirements and/or software requirements are testable and verifiable and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate with software project leads to develop test plans for AutoChem software products, determine testing resource requirements, and coordinate formal software product testing for these products.
  • Direct the efforts of the offshore test team and other identified test resources located at various sites in the development and execution of software test cases.
  • Provide consulting to testing resources to assist in proper test setup and execution.
  • Perform initial triage of bug reports to ensure proper content, format, and eliminate duplication when necessary.
  • Review test case execution documents for proper content and ensure proper storage.
  • Review recommended changes to test cases with the development team.

What You Need to Succeed

Bachelor’s degree in any field, plus 2 years of related experience. Foreign equivalent degrees are acceptable. Required experience must include 2 years in the following specific areas:

  • Working with software developers, product owners, and requirements engineers in agile/scrum software development methodology;
  • Definition and analysis of acceptance criteria and requirements of software products;
  • At least one defect tracking and continuous integration tool, such as Jira/Azure DevOps/Team Foundation Server;
  • Testing of software used in medical, pharmaceutical, or chemical industries;
  • Regression testing, exploratory testing, smoke testing, end-to-end system testing;
  • Developing test cases and test plans; and
  • Testing software which adheres to regulatory compliance.
Required experience must also include one (1) year of experience in technical project team leadership with the responsibility to report status and issues and provide guidance to software testers in testing related activities.

This position is hybrid. The individual can work from home 2 days/week and is required to be in the office three days/week.
